Canyon Nevidio
Nevidio Canyon is a canyon located in the central part of Montenegro. It is 55km from Nikšić.
Nevidio Canyon is part of the Mala Komarnica River, which rises at the foot of the southern slopes of Durmitor, more precisely in Dobri Dol. It passes between the peaks of Boljske grede (2091m asl) and Lojanik (2091m asl) before reappearing in the gentle valley as a permanent river. Mala Komarnica joins Pridvorica near the village of Duži and creates Velika Komarnica, which continues through the canyon until it enters the artificial Piva Lake created by the construction of the Mratinje hydroelectric power plant. Below Mratinje, the Piva flows for another 10 km to its confluence with the Tara River.…
At the very end of the valley, in the immediate vicinity of the main road Žabljak-Šavnik, begins the Nevidio Canyon or Nevidjbog, as the locals call it. It rightly bears this name because Komarnica suddenly disappears into a strangely carved entrance and becomes invisible to the human eye.
The area around the entrance is one of the most beautiful areas in the Durmitor region. The beauty of this region is the village of Pošćenje with two glacial lakes, the periodic Skakavica waterfall, which scatters the water of Grabovica, which flows into Komarnica, from a seventy-meter high rock.
Nevidio is about 2 km long. The entrance is located at 935 m, and the exit at 810 m above sea level.
Remote and hidden in inaccessible terrain, it attracted attention and curiosity, but there were few organized attempts to get to know and explore it. The first serious attempts were made in 1957 and 1964, which were unsuccessful. Strange and fantastic stories about the last unconquered canyon in Europe followed one another. That was until August 1965, when members of the PSD Javorak from Nikšić, although with scant equipment, passed through the canyon and were the first to present to the world the long-hidden, wild and astonishing beauty
The first contact with Nevidio overshadows with an indescribable beauty, unusual and strange to which man is not accustomed. Most of the canyon is in eternal shadow. Due to the vertical rocks, the sun's rays cannot reach the bottom. The steep and inaccessible rocks are harsh conditions for vegetation, so the canyon can be said to be a jewel of harsh nature that is both heaven and hell. The width of the canyon in some places is less than one meter. Some parts can only be passed with the help of mountaineering equipment
Today, Nevidio Canyon finds its place in the brochures as a unique tourist attraction. The unique beauty of the gorges, cascades and sparkling beech trees that Nevidio Canyon preserves is reason enough to visit this incredible jewel of Montenegro. However, although it does not require special physical fitness, passing through the canyon is not recommended without a guide.
The crossing season begins in July – if the water level of the Komarnica is lower, then a little earlier, and ends in September – if weather conditions allow, the season can be slightly extended. After heavy rains there is a risk of torrents and water levels. In addition to good physical condition, for the adventure, which usually lasts two to three hours, appropriate equipment is also necessary – a long diving suit with a thickness of at least 5 mm due to the extremely low water temperature of seven to eight degrees, footwear that allows you to move more easily on the…

During 2014, two accidents occurred in the canyon, in which two groups of tourists from Serbia were trapped due to very bad weather and torrential rain. Both teams were successfully rescued from Nevidije by the Mountain Rescue Service of Montenegro, without any injuries.
